Scoliosis
Why This Page is Here
As someone who has had two major operations for scoliosis, I decided to create a web page for individuals searching for information on the surgery.
My experiences may differ from other individuals, and certainly one surgeon's techniques will differ from another's. That's why if you are considering surgery for scoliosis, it may help you to ask your surgeon for names and numbers of patients he has treated. Speaking to people who have been treated by your doctor and the hospital(s) he uses is the most accurate gauge of the kind of care you will receive.
What You Will Find Here
This site is just being developed, so check back from time to time for progress and additional information.
Aside from my experiences with scoliosis surgery, I plan to offer information regarding alternative health information that may be useful. Expect some links to other sites about scoliosis and information on mailing lists and forums devoted to this topic.
A Brief Description of Scoliosis
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that results in either a C-shaped or S-shaped curvature. Curves that measure less than ten degrees are treated as a non-threatening deviation, but most curves will be watched by the doctor to see if they progress.
The most common "type" of scoliosis is called idiopathic, which means that its cause is unknown. In other words, if you are diagnosed with this type of scoliosis, rest assured that you didn't "do" anything to "cause" it. It's just how your spine has grown.
